Who are the Alts?

Alt Family History

It all begins in Alsace, France. Alsace is part German and part French with a language and culture of their own. The Alts were Alsatians who managed vineyards and had a small winery in the village of Ottersthal, France. Our family decided to leave the small village life behind on 17 January 1893 for hopes of a brighter future in the New World. The Alt Family settled in Alpine Township Michigan because of the agricultural potential of the region. The Alts started with a small dairy as many did in those days. Along with dairy cows the Alts farmed grains, apples, cherries, pears, peaches and now grapes. Wine making has been a part of the Alt family for centuries and is now available in a bottle near you.

What is The Fruit Ridge?

It is considered to be an "agricultural mecca" as its unique features make it one of the prime fruit-growing regions in the world. The area's deposits of fertile clay loam soils with excellent moisture holding qualities, elevation of greater than 900 feet, and its proximity to Lake Michigan; creates a unique climate and provides great soil and terrain for the growing of premium fruits and vegetables.

Our farm is located 25 miles from the coast of Lake Michigan. This proximity to the lake means that even though we are in the Midwest, we are protected from deep winter freezes from Canada that could damage the vines. The hilly terrain of the Ridge is also beneficial during spring frost events. During a frost event the cool air flows to the low areas and the fruit on top of the hill are protected. Our summer temperatures are hot which helps the fruit to ripen. In the fall we have large temperature swings which help the fruit build sugar and flavor.

Winemaker Introduction

Hello,

My name is Denny Alt. I am a 5th generation farmer. I didn’t grow up on a vineyard or spend 10 years at winery in France to learn how to make wine. I found my passion right here in Michigan. I did grow up in a fruit orchard growing apples, peaches, cherries, corn, soybeans and wheat. I grew up around the home brewing culture making hard cider in barrels and sweet fruit wines. My appreciation for real wine began when I stared working with grape growers. I learned that wine is made in the vineyard. And that it’s the wineries job to capture nature in a bottle. Now I want to share the best the Fruit Ridge has to offer with family and friends. By providing the best wine.

Best, Denny Alt
